Travel Documents

For F-1 Students and F-1 Dependents (F-2)

If you’re leaving the United States and you need a new visa stamp, find out what you need to do.

F-1 students and their dependents who leave the US must have the following documents in order to re-enter the US in F status:

  • Valid passport (passport must be valid for at least 6 months)
  • Valid (unexpired) US visa stamp (page) in your passport (except for Canadian Citizens)
  • Valid I-20 form showing F-1 or F-2 status, signed for travel on page 2 by a DSO within the last year (six months for Canadian students and students on Post-Completion Optional Practical Training). If you need to update your travel signature or if you have lost your I-20, submit an I-20 reprint request in your myStatus portal.
  • Proof of financial support (Bring copies of documents mentioned on your I-20 funding letter, TA/RA funding letter or bank statements for personal funds.)
  • Proof of enrollment, such as your certificate of enrollment or a transcript

If the F-2 dependents are traveling without the student, they need all the above documents, plus the following:

  • Copy of the student’s F-1 visa page
  • Copy of the student’s most recent I-94 arrival record as proof of the student’s F-1 status
  • Copy of the student’s I-20

For F-1 OPT or OPT STEM Extension

For more information on travelling while on OPT or OPT Stem Extension, please visit the Office of Global Learning’s website.
