First Week in the US & NYC
Be sure to check out our Living on Roosevelt Island & NYC page also as it has many resources specific to New York City and Roosevelt Island!
Banking
There are many banks around NYC where you can open an account. Be sure to check each bank’s website to see what documents are required to open an account. Typically, a bank will ask for the following:
- Passport
- I-20 or DS-2019
- Proof of your NYC address (e.g. a lease or a utility bill in your name)
Be sure to let the bank representative know that you are an international student studying in the U.S.
You do not need a social security number (SSN) to open a bank account.
NYC Transportation
You can get around NYC by using bikes, buses, the subway, ride-sharing services like Lyft or Uber, or taxis. Check out some tips below for each of the major ways to get around NYC!
Bikes
If you plan on biking, be sure to familiarize yourself with New York’s cycling traffic laws!
NYC Buses, Subway, and the Roosevelt Island Tram
MetroCards are electronic fare cards for use on NYC buses, subways, and the Roosevelt Island Tram. These cards are available for purchase at many subway stops and the tram stops.
As an alternative to buying a physical MetroCard, you can also pay for the MTA through your phone, contactless card or digital wallet. If you pay using the same card, you’ll never be charged more than $34 over a 7-day period! Learn more on the OMNY website.
Phone
There are many phone service providers available; some of the top ones are AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon. They offer different prepaid and contract-based options.
Some carriers may offer student discounts, so it is best to check with the stores owned by the mobile provider directly rather than “authorized dealers”.
Some students bring an “unlocked” phone from home and buy a U.S. SIM card at a U.S. airport, from a mobile provider, or a prepaid card online.
